Understand return on investment (ROI)

A common formula is ROI = (ending value minus cost) divided by cost, multiplied by 100. If income, dividends, or distributions are part of the outcome, include them consistently in the ending value before comparing alternatives.
Enter the initial cost and final value, including the cash flows that belong in the comparison. Use the same treatment of fees, taxes, and income for every option so that the comparison is fair.
Worked planning example
If an investment costs $10,000 and later has a total value of $12,000 after including relevant income, the gain is $2,000. The simple ROI is 20%. That result does not tell you whether the gain happened in one year or ten years, so add time to the analysis.

How to interpret the result
A higher ROI is not automatically the better choice. Check the period, risk taken, cash required, and whether the result includes costs. A lower but repeatable return with appropriate risk can be more useful than a higher one-time percentage.

Simple ROI ignores the timing of cash flows and does not annualise the result. It can also obscure risk, taxes, financing costs, and liquidity. Use an annualised measure or a cash-flow model when comparing investments held for different periods.
